For most people New Year’s Eve means big celebrations and good times with friends. And those good times often involve drinking. There is nothing wrong with having a few celebratory drinks, so long as you are responsible about it and plan ahead.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, New Year’s is the deadliest day of the year for speed-related accidents. Furthermore, 54% of allaccident-related deaths on New Year's are alcohol-related. Here a few safety tips to help ensure that everyone is safe and sound when the clock strikes midnight (and beyond):

• DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE. Make your transportation plans ahead of time. Designate a driver, call a cab or consider public transportation.
• Use extreme caution on roadways. While you may be smart enough to refrain from driving under the influence, the roads are likely to be filled with other, less responsible party goers.
• Monitor your alcohol intake. Pay attention to how much you and those around you are consuming. Drinking too much alcohol can have lethal consequences.
• Be aware of your surroundings. Never leave your drink unattended. Stay with your friends. Be sure to have a cell phone or other communication device with you in case you are separated and/or designate a meeting place should someone get separated.
• Consider your pets before using noisemakers. Pets are often frightened by sudden loud noises and may run off or bite someone at the sounds of fireworks or other noisemakers. Take proper precautions.
