Spring Cleaning Safety

Comments Off

Spring certainly seems to have sprung, at least in Minnesota. Springtime means a lot of different things to people, but one item that usually comes to mind is Spring Cleaning. But before you start climbing up the step ladder or digging through your medicine cabinet, here are a few suggestions to keep in mind:

  • Ladders. Before using the ladder, make sure it’s set on level ground and, if someone is available, have them hold at the base. When using a ladder, don’t climb above the safe standing level – usually, second step on a step-ladder and fourth on an extension ladder.
  • Carrying loads. Always be sure that you can see over the load and have one hand free to hold on to a railing if you have to traverse stairs.
  • Medicine Cabinet. Check expiration dates and throw out expired medications as they often lose their effectiveness or may become dangerous. Get rid of improperly stored items. When disposing of prescription medications, check with your community about prescription drop-off locations so that the medications are properly disposed of. Many prescription drugs are harmful to the environment.
  • Cleaning Products. Be sure to follow all safety instructions on the bottle and take the proper precautions with harmful or dangerous cleaning products. Make sure these products are properly stored and out of the reach of small children.
  • Clear Pathways. Avoid creating so many piles that you can’t safely maneuver around them. Keep electrical cords clear of walkways.

So before you start digging through your closet or climbing a ladder – Think About It.
