It’s back to school time, so that means lots of yellow on the roadways – yellow school buses, that is. Now is a great time to review some safety tips for school bus riders, as well as for all drivers on the roads.

Bus Passengers:

  • - Know your bus number and the bus driver’s name to be sure you are on the correct bus.
  • - Plan to get to the bus stop early.
  • - Walk on sidewalks, where available. If there are no sidewalks, be sure to walk on the left-side of the roadway (against traffic).
  • - At the bus stop, stay out of the street. Stay at least five giant steps away from the curb.
  • - Before boarding, always be sure the bus driver can see you. Stay at least ten giant steps away from the bus.
  • - If you have to cross a street to get on or after exiting the bus, wait until the driver let’s you know it’s okay. Always cross in front of the bus.
  • - Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it to get on or before standing up to get off.
  • - Talk quietly on the bus. Avoid distracting the driver.
  • - Keep the aisles clear. Place your backpacks, books, etc. in your lap once seated.
  • - Never talk to strangers at the bus stop. Never get into the car with a stranger.

Drivers:

  • - Slow down and pay attention. Take extra care to look for children at intersections, alleyways, driveways, and on curbs.
  • - Do not proceed until children have reached a place of safety.
  • - Know the law in Minnesota:
  • o Red means stop. Drivers must stop at least 20 feet away from a bus displaying an extended stop-signal arm and flashing red lights.
  • o Yellow means slow down, don’t pass. Drivers must not pass or attempting to pass a school bus on the right-hand, passenger-side of the bus when the bus is displaying pre-warning flashing amber signals.
  • o Violation of these laws is a gross misdemeanor. Violators face a fine of at least $300.

Keep these tips in mind and have a safe and fun school year!

Think about it.

Great timely article - these are great reminders that I will talk to my kids about.

We have had some new bus safety issues in our school district - with the budget issues in our schools, the district eliminated a lot of bus stops and consolidated routes. One change our school district made was to avoid taking side streets - they now leave the majority of children at the closest busy intersection. I have been emailing/calling our district like crazy of late - I have personally observed a lot of safety issues with their new routes. While I understand the budget issue, I believe they may have a much bigger issue shortly if they don't prioritize our children's safety.

Thank you for posting!
