Whether you are heading out on a cross-country road trip or just heading to work, everyone should have a winter survival kit in their vehicle. Here are a few items that everyone attempting a drive in winter conditions should have in their automobile:

  • Windshield scraper (with a brush or broom)
  • Flash light (install the batteries backwards to avoid having the flashlight accidentally turn on and burn through the batteries before you need it)
  • A shovel
  • Radio (battery-powered or crank-operated)
  • High energy snack foods (energy or candy bars, ready-to-eat soups or canned fruit with an opener are a great option)
  • Jumper cables
  • First aid kit (with pocket knife and necessary medications)
  • Emergency flares
  • Extra clothing (winter coat, boots, socks, a blanket, etc.)
  • Sand or other traction aid (cat litter works well too)
  • Cell phone (with adapter that plugs into lighter)
  • Bright colored flag or strip of cloth (tie to antenna to make you more visible)

Other tips:

  • Put the survival kit in the passenger compartment (in case you cannot get to or cannot open your trunk)
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full
  • Stay in your vehicle until help arrives

Think about it.
